10 Tips to Get the Best Wedding Photos – Part 7: Don’t Miss the Details That Make Your Story Yours
If I could go back to my own wedding day, I’d do one thing differently.
I would’ve slowed down, taken a breath, and made sure the little things—the meaningful things—were captured.
Not the flowers or the cake. I’m talking about my grandfather’s old watch I forgot to wear. The hand-written note my wife gave me that I shoved in my pocket and never photographed. The tiny picture of my wife’s grandma she tied to her bouquet that no one noticed because we didn’t think to mention them.
These are the pieces of our story that are now only in our memory.
And memories fade. Pictures do not.
Don’t Make the Same Mistake I Did
This tip is one that comes from the heart:
Include the meaningful details that tell your story—because you won’t get a second chance.
That ring dish your mom gave you when you got engaged?
The bracelet you wore on your first date?
The handkerchief from your grandmother’s wedding?
The little drawing your niece made for you, tucked in your pocket?
These things matter. They may seem small in the rush and stress of the day, but they hold so much emotional weight. And when the music fades and the guests go home, these are the pieces that will carry the story of your love, your family, your beginnings.
What I Wish I Had Known
As a wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of documenting hundreds of love stories. But as a groom? I missed it. I wasn’t a wedding photographer yet when we got married. I didn’t know better. And I didn’t had blogs articles like this one to guide me. So pay attention, you will thank me latter. I didn’t think to tell my photographer what the watch meant. I didn’t mention the inside joke written in tiny letters on our vows. We didn’t even get a proper photo of the perfume my wife wore—the one I’ll never forget the scent of.
Now when I look at our photos, they’re beautiful. They really are.
But something’s missing.
The emotion behind the objects. The soul of our story. Who we are and where do we come from.
Here’s What You Can Do
Gather your special items ahead of time. Rings, heirlooms, letters, gifts—put them all together in a small box and have it ready when your photographer arrives.
Tell us what matters. When we know the backstory, we shoot it differently. With more care, more intention, more heart.
Think outside the box. It doesn’t have to be fancy. It just has to be you.
Your wedding day is a one-time thing. There are no do-overs.
So don’t just focus on what looks good—focus on what feels good. On what’s meaningful. On what tells your story long after the day is done.
Make sure they’re there.
Make sure they’re remembered.
